I am sure everyone is familiar with the concept of "life hacks". They are basically little things you can do, usually utilizing something with a purpose for something else (look it up if you are unsure, some are brilliant!)

Well it got me thinking, whilst these in themselves can save money I was keen to start a thread on ideas or things others do to save money.

This is not aimed at investing, taxation, structuring.etc because they are ofcourse all major things that require a lot more discussion. This really is more basic stuff that anyone can do.

    I'll kick it off:
If you have Foxtel. Call and immediately ask to be put through to retentions as you wish to cancel your service. When connected simply explain you now have Netflix which is costing you $10 a month with a lot more content you enjoy. Guaranteed the person will ask what you watch on Foxtel at which time you can say a dumbed down version of what you actually might. The end result will almost always be a reduction on your spend plus free channels for X period. When that period ends call and repeat.
I save myself $40 a month since doing this and have lost almost no channels.

I am on my third retentions cycle, the last time I called I think they accepted it wasn't going to stop and made my discount for 12 months.

When paying bills a lot of the time there is a surcharge for Amex and even Visa/MasterCard. You can use Aus Post BillPay and select pay via PayPal. You can then link your Amex to PayPal which allows you to collect the points, avoid the surcharge and use borrowed money.

It works best if you get it renewal time. They think they've one getting the extra bucks. ..then pow! You ring up playing dum if they cover windscreens ;)

Not sure if I totally got the meaning right....

ask for discount on your utility bills, have been told you automatically get 10% off

grocery shopping on line, I save at least $80 pw, it's too easy to get suckered and throw goodies in the trolley you don't need, loving on line shopping

Pay cash for all items, but ask for the credit card surcharge to be discounted against your purchase, if they say NO, then stuff them use your credit card

Now the big one is watch out for stamps that have not been marked and reuse, I have possibly saved myself all of $10, my kids crack up at this one, but they have come around, they are also using my stamps.....that's just cheap...

Money hack: don't spend money on non income producing items with money you don't have.

No pay tv, shop for specials, eat seasonally, buy second hand instead of new, see if you really need whatever you want to buy, see if you can get something for free, save electricity, put on a jumper instead the heater, eat at home, etc

I honestly think it should be, but every now and then when I mention things like that, some people look at me funny and think it's weird that I look after the pennies that much.

"Who cares? You only live once! "

Exactly and I don't want to be poor in this one life.

My insurance renewal is always more expensive than a new policy. I call them up asking why and always manage to get it reduced.

I don't think penny pinching is how you get wealthy. May be initially needed to get your going but having a penny pinching mentality will sometimes keep you poor and focused on the wrong things
